Walking Foot?

Necessary for stitch in the ditch or expensive and unnecessary?

  1. I don't see where my recent post went through so I'll keep an eye out and rewrite one if need be.

  2. A walking foot is never a waste of money. Look for an open toe one for easy visibility. If your machine doesn't have an open toe one, just use a regular one.

You can try to do it without a walking foot and see how it goes.

  3. Good investment...for any kind of straight-line quilting and also for sewing on bindings or anything that has lots of layers.

  4. Absolutely necessary! One of the best purchases you'll ever make, splurge on one!

  5. Thanks for the advice - I guess I need to go to Mel's and pick up a Bernina foot. On a college student budget I'm already cringing.

  6. I will just add my 2 cents here. I quilted for over 30 years without a walking foot and it can be done successfully, however my work improved a lot when I got the Pfaff with the dual feed (like a walking foot). The other thing that improved my quilting is a flat surface, like a cabinet or extension table to support the quilt while quilting.

  7. Another trick to keep the layers from scootching is to lift the presser foot every 3-4 inches along the seam. The top layer gets pushed ahead of the others by the presser foot while the bottom layer is helped along by the feed dogs. A walking foot is worth the investment. Even when using a walking foot, I do the trick of lifting the presser foot so the layers stay aligned.
